Perhaps, another scintillating news of 2018 is here. India’s Telecom honcho Bharti Airtel and Google recently announced a partnership to offer low-cost smartphones, powered by Android Go.

To know more, Airtel would be bringing Android Go based smartphones to the Indian markets, collaborating with the handset manufacturers under its ‘Mera Pehla Smartphone’ initiative from March 2018. More on this sates that Lava and Micromax are set to launch the first set of 4G devices powered by Android Oreo.

Notably, Android Oreo (Go edition) or Android Go is a trimmed down version of Android 8.1 Oreo aimed at low-cost smartphones. Thus, this works even with smartphones that have only 512MB of RAM and also has access to a slew of apps designed for low-bandwidth. Also, these smartphones, formed out of the collaborations, along with basic specifications, would be compatible with Airtel applications, including MyAirtel, Airtel TV, and Wynk Music. Also, Airtel is reportedly said to offer cash back offers and bundled plans to take on its rival Reliance Jio, with its plan.

To this, Bharti Airtel Chief Marketing Officer Vani Venkatesh added that “This partnership is a major milestone for the ‘Mera Pehla Smartphone’ initiative. Android Go will provide a massive boost to our efforts to bring affordable smartphone options to the market and potentially enable hundreds of millions of feature phone users and unconnected people to get online”.

Also, with this, the company added in a statement, that, “Airtel has joined the Seamless Alliance which will usher in a new era of open innovation for mobile operators and airlines by empowering mobile operators to extend their services into airline cabins”.

To look back, the ‘Mera Pehla Smartphone’ programme, which had its launch in October last year, saw Airtel collaborating with multiple handset makers to bring in affordable 4G smartphones with cash back offers and bundled plans.
