The telecom sector is beaming with some really exciting news this season. This states of OpenSignal publishing its mobile networks report for the month of October, declaring Airtel as the network providing the fastest download speed on 3G and 4G. Along with this, the report also states of Jio having the maximum availability and even if its average download speed has improved, it still falls behind way behind its peers.

Six months prior to this, Airtel had topped the list for the fastest download speed among the 4G service providers. The new report, however, states of Airtel offering average LTE download speed of 9.2 Mbps while the 3G download speed averaged at 3.6 Mbps. The speeds are however down from the OpenSignal’s previous published report.

Even if Jio secures the prime position among the networks having the fastest download speed among 4G service providers, OpenSignal stills declared Airtel as the fastest among all its contemporaries. The report further states about Reliance Jio’s LTE download speeds, which has shown significant improvement in the last six months. Open Signal also states about measuring the average download speed, summing up to 5.8Mbps on Jio’s 4G LTE network, which by far is the lowest among the four national 4G operators. But even after this, it still secures the zenith position with its huge coverage of nearly 130 million users.

The reason behind this success of Jio is its existence as a green field LTE-only network and thereby this has increased the chances of availability. The report also confirms about Jio’s already impressive LTE reach, which has even gotten better with most of the users being able to latch onto an LTE signal more than 95.6 percent of the time. Jio comes 32 percentage points ahead of its nearest competitor in OpenSignal’s availability metric.

OpenSignal also speaks about its methodology involving 7.36 billion measurements collected from 708,504 devices during the period of June 1 to August 31, 2017. The reports are based on the data, collected from users of the OpenSignal mobile app for Android and iOS.

The ending part states of the report states that the top three service providers, i.e. Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea, perceiving their LTE reach improve during the test period but with a decline in the speed. Among the 4G customers, Vodafone users have experienced the lowest latency while Jio has the highest latency. In 3G, both Vodafone and Airtel score equal by offering lowest latency. The report further highlights that Jio’s speeds improved at a rapid pace after the end of its free data service on March 31, 2017. It also says about Jio’s average download speeds, getting improved from 3.9Mbps to 5.8Mbps and thus the Jio users “found themselves with more access to the 4G bandwidth.”
