Bharti Airtel, India’s biggest telecom operator, is in the news again. This time it has announced several new recharge packs, starting from Rs.8 to Rs.399. This measure by Airtel is basically done to curb the growing popularity of Reliance Jio, which has been successful in roping in 12 crore customers, within quite a short period of time. Now to counter Jio’s Dhan Dhana Dhan offer, Bharti Airtel has also revamped its data offerings.
Other plans enlist that with the launch of Jio 4G feature phone, other operators might also get prompted to come up with the innovations of low-cost handsets.
Since last September, Airtel’s profit margins have taken a back seat, ever since Jio started its services. As per financial reports, Airtel has witnessed a 75 percent decline in its net profit, coming down to an to Rs.367 crore, in comparison to Rs.1,462, which was the amount a year back. Speculations are also on the rift that this kind of competitive environment is likely to prevail even in the future, as the latest entrant to the Telecom Industry, i.e. Jio, in all probability will be maintaining its aggressive pricing to gain market share.
