Flipkart is making forays into men’s fashion world. The eminent online marketplace launched a range of fashion and accessories exclusively for men, named Metronaut. In fact, the virtual marketplace aims to launch a number of premiere brands in furniture, decor and fashion before the annual festive season this year.

According to Mr. Rishi Vasudev, the vice president, Fashions Division, Flipkart, “Metronaut is a combination of Metro + Astronaut, with the black and white logo designed to resemble a spaceship.” Moreover, he was also quoted as saying, “The brand targets the youth migrating to metros with hopes and dreams of building a bright future for themselves.” The wide range of items available under the Metronaut brand includes shirts, tee shirts, wallets, sunglasses and belts.

Only contemporary fashion will be available at an affordable price under the Metronaut brand. The majority of the items cost below INR 1,000 and fresh stocks will be launched every two to three months. As of now, the Flipkart plans to launch the Autumn Winter collection this year within a very short time.

The closest competitors to Flipkart in this aspect are Jabong and Myntra. According to experts, with this strategic move, Flipkart has made a great attempt to lead its competitors to the edge.

While further interacting with the media, Mr. Vasudev was quoted as saying, “Apparel is a one-lakh-crore market wherein, sub-₹1,000 apparel constitutes 60 per cent of the demand. While there are strong global men’s wear brands and home-grown brands with popular product lines, there is a huge opportunity to offer a high-quality, well-designed, affordable product line that will take on the unorganized market — that’s where Metronaut comes in.”

The products are exclusively designed by the in-house team. The eTailing market in India is expected to touch the 100-billion mark by 2020. Considering this immense opportunity, industry veterans opine that Flipkart has made the right move in the right direction and that too, at the right time.
