If you are cool with refurbished smartphones with a limited warranty, then Flipkart certainly has some good news for you. The eCommerce retailer plans to sell refurbished smartphones. According to the Economic Times report, the refurbished items will be available to customers from Diwali onward.

The Economic Times further mentioned the Flipkart-certified refurbished handsets will be sold both online and offline. As such, Flipkart is holding discussions with the distributors to facilitate the over-the-counter sale. As far as the online sale is concerned, the eCommerce retailer plans to rope in its logistic arm, eKart for shipping.

According to experts, this is a counter strategy taken by Flipkart to take on its rival Amazon. A senior executive, who looks after the offline distribution for Flipkart, has been quoted by the Economic Times as saying, “Even though Flipkart has of late tightened return norms on mobile phones and only allows replacement in case of a defect, it is already saddled with a lot of return inventory. There are also handsets with minor problems which are replaced. The company plans to get them checked and certified to look and work like new and sell them as Flipkart-certified refurbished handsets. There will be limited warranty as well on such products. According to the ET report, Flipkart plans to introduce refurbished smartphones from brands like Sony Xperia, Motorola, Samsung On Series, Lenovo, Panasonic and Micromax. The refurbished smartphones will be offered at 60-75% of their market price. Goods and Services Tax (GST) levies a uniform 12% tax on smartphones, replacing the varied rates of Value Added Tax (VAT) imposed by various state governments. In this circumstance, Flipkart seems to get involved in offline sales to reach out to a broader customer base.
