Now commuters in Kolkata will get real time bus updates on Google. The search engine giant has recently launched the Real Time bus information in India, flagging off the service from Kolkata. To begin with, Google has tied up with the West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC).
People using Google Maps will be getting real time information on the arrival of the buses operated by the WBTC. The arrival time of the nest bus on the route is also available with this feature. Google Maps already provides real time traffic updates showing traffic congestion and alternative routes. No doubt, now with this added feature planning a travel in the city of joy will become easier.
Commenting on the launch of this service, the state Transport Minister, Subhendu Adhikari said, “This is yet another attempt to bring smart public transport to Kolkata and to improve the performance of WBTC.” It is to be mentioned that back in March the Government of West Bengal had launched the Pathadisha app, which show the real time updates for WBTC buses on move. The app also provides suggestions for bus routes.
Using the real time transit feature
The feature has been rolled out both for Android and iOS. To use this, just go to Google Maps, enter the destination details and tap on Get Directions and select the Transit/Transport icon. Real time information of the buses en route will be shown.
WBTC Managing Director Narayan Swaroop Nigam expects, this will help increase the footfall in state buses in turn generating more.
Though at present the feature is only enabled for key routes of the city, people associated with the matter said the service will be enabled for other routes also. But as of now there has been no word form Google on expanding this feature to the other cities of the country.
