Google has officially declared that it is opening an AI center in Beijing, China. The confirmation comes after months of speculation fueled by a major push to hire AI talent inside the country. Googles mentioned that the facility will be the first its kind in Asia and will focus to employ local talent. Silicon Valley is aiming heavily on the future applications for AI.
China has also indicated strong support for AI development and catching up with the US. Research into artificial intelligence has the potential to improve a range of technologies, from self-driving cars and automated factories to translation products and facial recognition software. But this hiring is not a sign that Google will release new services in China. Although it did make it’s Google Translate App Handy in China previously on this year in a rare product move on Chinese land.
Aimed at basic AI research the center will consist of a team of AI researchers n Beijing, supported by Google China’s strong engineering teams. Google has already hired some top experts, and will be working to build will be working to build the team in the months ahead. Along with Dr. Jia Li Head of Research and Development at Google Cloud AI, Google is leading and coordinating the research.
The Google AI China Center will also support the AI research community by funding and be sponsoring AI conferences and workshops, and be working closely with the vibrant Chinese AI research community.
Li added, “Besides publishing its own work, the Google AI China Center will also support the AI research community by funding and sponsoring AI conferences and workshops, and working closely with the vibrant Chinese AI research community”
Google mentions that the Google AI China is a small contribution to this goal. Google also added that the company would look forward to work with the highest with the brightest AI researchers with the brightest AI researchers in China to help find solutions to the world’s problems.
