Airtel is offering iPhone at ₹7,777 and yes, it is absolutely true. India’s largest telecom service provider, Bharti Airtel announced the launch of its latest digital innovation, i.e. the Online Store, that will be offering a premium of smartphones with quite affordable smartphones, instant credit verification, and financing, and bundled monthly plans.

So, to have a good start, the company has listed the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus with the former being offered for as low as Rs 7,777 for the 32GB variant. Of course, this is a great offer. But, really?

Here, the customers need to know the intricate details of the offer first. While talking of the 32GB iPhone 7, customers would have to make a down payment of Rs 7,777 and then they are enabled for the payment of 24 monthly installments of Rs 2,499. The installments come with a built-in postpaid plan that offers 30GB data, unlimited calling (local, STD, national roaming), and Airtel Secure package that would provide the safeguard of the device against physical damage and cyber theft.

Also, the 128GB iPhone can be availed for ₹16,300, the 32GB iPhone 7 Plus for Rs 17,300, and the 128GB iPhone 7 Plus 26,000, all of which would be available with the Rs 2,499 monthly installment, including the postpaid plan.

Before going deeper into how much one would have to pay for each variant in totality at the end of the two years, the TL: DR version of the Airtel needs to be sorted out. Airtel’s plan is similar to the on-contract smartphone sales plan that the telecoms industry in the US carries out. In accordance to that, it would be charging customers with a down-payment that is almost fraction of the full price. Then, it would be also asking the consumers to pay a certain amount every month, enlisting the charges for cellular services like data and the calls.

But, frankly speaking, this model has till now, not gained any success in India. The prime reason being that it is kind of loaded against the consumers. By the time their contract with a telecom company expires, they end up paying much more than the actual payment for a phone and telecom services. At the same time, they also end up losing the flexibility of choosing the telecom operator. In this current case of the iPhone 7 and the Airtel offer of Rs 7,777, it is the same thing. While opting for the iPhone 7 at Rs 7,777 from Airtel Online store, the customers would have to end up paying significantly more compared to how much they would have to pay actually for purchasing the phone from the open market and then subscribe to an Airtel plan. In fact, the difference is quite significant at over ₹10,000.

Now the list of details of the payment, customers would have to pay by the end of the two years via the Airtel Online Store:

iPhone 7 32GBRs 7,777 (down payment) + 24 x Rs 2,499 = Rs 67,753.

iPhone 7 128GBRs 16,300 (down payment) + 24 x Rs 2,499 = Rs 76,276.

iPhone 7 Plus 32GBRs 17,300 (down payment) + 24 x Rs 2,499 = Rs 77,276.

iPhone 7 Plus 128GBRs 26,000 (down payment) + 24 x Rs 2,499 = Rs 85,976.

The above list is the cumulative amount for each of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus variants the customers would have to pay at the end of two years if getting it from the Airtel Online Store. Lastly, as the company states this is inclusive not only of the price of the phone but also the monthly data benefits of 30GB data and unlimited calling for 24 months.
