Jio Phone 2, which is the latest successor to last year’s launch Jio Phone and runs on KaiOS, was previously announced on the first part of this month, by parent company Reliance Industries Limited’s AGM 2018. So, these two phones run on KaiOS i.e. a forked version of Firefox OS.

Reliance Jio has previously announced that it had planned to bring three popular apps, listing, YouTube, WhatsApp, and Facebook on the Jio Phone. While these apps are scheduled to reach the Jio Phone on August 15, there is already a new firmware update for KaiOS which has brought the Google Maps for the Jio Phone users. This further refers to the fact users with Jio phones would be able to use the Google Maps on their Jio Phones to navigate.

Google back in June had invested $22 million into KaiOS to support the company’s efforts of bringing Google suite of apps for feature phones like the Jio Phone and Nokia’s KaiOS-powered phones. So, now the Jio Phone has also received the Google Maps which could be quite suggestive of the fact that the feature phone in near future could receive other Google apps also. Google Maps is also expected to come in the upcoming Jio Phone 2 when it reaches the masses.

For downloading Google Maps, users just need to first update the software of the feature phone. For doing this, users need to go to Settings> Device> Software Update. Once the software has been updated users might as well visit the JioStore app to view the list of apps available for download on the phone. Then, comes the installation of Google Maps. Once the installation is done, users would see an app shortcut of Google Maps on the screen.

However, a bit of warning here for the users also suggests that they would be highly disappointed if they expect the Google Maps to function the way it does in the smartphone. The app has been designed for a feature phone and thus offers only basic functionaries. Users might as well search for a place, get the map view, Drive, two-wheeler, Train or bus and more. YouTube, the video streaming service from Google is expected to come on Jio Phone and Jio Phone 2 from August 15.

Jio Phone was announced at the company’s 40th AGM, where the company claimed that the feature phone in 22 months of its launch has doubled its user base from 124 million to 215 million. The phone had already received the support for Facebook back in February this year but the users are more eager for the WhatsApp to come on the phone. However, just like the Facebook and Google Maps, users might as well keep their fingers crossed and even expect WhatsApp to perform only minimal functions in the phone.
