Google released the Android Go Platform on its Google for India event. The company has also announced that it is bringing the Google Assistant to Reliance’s $25 JioPhone. This is said to be the first feature phone in the world. Unlike other smartphones, JioPhone is a little different from any other feature phone in the market right now. The Jio phone itself comes with its own in-house-assistant called HelloJio.
HelloJio can be used for voice search and to fire up relevant apps like calling and texting people. Just like it is on the high-end smartphone Google assistant will permit the users of JioPhone to get the fastest and relevant details about their search query both in the text as well as in a conversation based manner.
Google Assistant on JioPhone will be available in both English and Hindi. Google is customizing the Assistant Experience to fit the 2.4-inch QVGA screen, but when it comes to usability the AI should work the same way it does on Android and iOS devices.
It is not clarified when and how Google Assistant will be rolling out the JioPhone but since the JioPhone supports OTA updates, it is expected the functionality to be added to it via a software update in the days to come.
The Product Management Director said, “For the first time ever globally, the Google Assistant will be available on a feature phone. This special version of the Google Assistant in both English and Hindi will appear on the new Reliance JioPhones. Whether in entry-level smartphones or JioPhones, the Google Assistant can help you call, text, play music and videos, and access other apps”.
To recall the Jio feature phone is smarter in contrast to other feature phones in the market at present. The device is 4G LTE and VoLTE- ready which means that it has the potentiality to become a users full-fledged internet device.
The JioPhone will have two versions. One batch will be powered by a Snapdragon 205 SoC. A processor Qualcomm has specifically for ultra-affordable 4G VoLTE phones. The other batch will come with an un-specified Spreadtrum-based processor inside.
