Very recently, quite a few Microsoft Surface Pro 4 have been complaining about their flickering screen issues on the tablets. The Microsoft’s support forums have showcased the problems which have been constant for more than a year now, and also when the majority of the devices are out of warranty. Here Flickergate, a website close to this issues reported that at least 1,600 Surface Pro 4 owners have experienced this screen flickering issue.

What is the issue?

This flickering seems like a hardware issue, which occurs after the device heats up during use. Here, a source close to the Microsoft also states that “We are aware that some customers have experienced a screen flicker on Surface Pro 4 and are monitoring the situation closely”. Customers impacted by this should contact Microsoft support.”

Some owners have even started freezing their tablets to stop the screen flickering temporarily. As per an owner, “I get about half an hour’s use out of it after ten minutes in the freezer,”. Another user posted a video showing how the flickering stops as soon as the Surface Pro 4 is placed in a freezer. It is quite predictable that screen flickering problem is a hardware issue that Microsoft won’t be able to fix with a software update. Another part here also states that it’s currently affecting less than 1 percent of all Surface Pro 4 devices.

While Microsoft recommends that owners should contact their support lines, as devices are generally out of warranty when the problems have started occurring. Some affected users have reportedly paid $800 for an out-of-warranty exchange with Microsoft to fix the hardware issue.

Here, the Flickergate group also regarded that, “Surface Pro’s are marketed and priced as premium devices. Microsoft should, therefore, respond accordingly by acknowledging the issue and offering a solution. If the issue is a hardware fault, then Microsoft should recall affected devices.”

Considering the Surface Pro range, this is notoriously hard to repair. So, talking of replacements, if anything, would be the way to go.
