Finally, the wait is over. The much expected Jio phone is being launched at the Reliance Industries AGM, at Mumbai, today at 11 AM, as declared by Mukesh Ambani.
This announcement comes exactly after a year, where in the 2016 AGM, declarations of the Reliance Jio telecom network had been proudly done by the Reliance Industries chairman.
The launch of this feature phone, loaded with smartphone features, is basically an attempt of Mr. Ambani to bring an end to ‘digital disempowerment and unfairness’, by providing affordable data and devices.
With its inception from 15tH August, digital freedom will be enabled for all Jio Phone users for ₹ 153 per month, as declared by Mr. Ambani.
Phones will be available to users for beta testing on August 15 and pre-booking will be initiated from August 24. Also, this initiation will make the 2G feature phones obsolete. From now onward, all Jio phones will be made in India.
More on the phone:
After introducing the phone, Isha and Akash Ambani regarded that Jio has remarkably succeeded in creating a world record of 100 million customers, adding 7 customers every second. Also, they expressed a word of gratitude towards Narendra Modi and his dream of Digital India. Today, Jio consumers have their share of 125 GB of data, making it the largest network, and also overtaking U.S. and China in mobile data consumption and days are near when India will receive the prime position in mobile broadband users.
They stated with joy that out of the 78 crore mobile phone users in India, over 50 crores are feature phones. Their competitors took 25 years to make a 2G network and Jio made a much larger 4G network in 3 years.
Features and Functions:
As per the reports and declaration, this new feature phone is designed to be very friendly and affordable. Intex has confirmed that talks are on the final step that where Intex made feature phones are likely to reach the market this quarter. But the phones have already arrived, so the first lot will be imported from China, where the company is apparently conglomerating with OEMs such as Zhejiang Techain Electronics Technology Co., and Crave and Megaphone.
This feature phone might be a low-end basic handset, but will be equipped with all the features equivalent to that of a smartphone. Starting from Video Calling, Internet tethering to a custom software (KAI OS) and app marketplace (KaiOS Plus) and access to Jio TV and JioCinema apps, the phone is stated to have it all. Also, it will have the support for a digital voice assistant with the support for Indian languages.
Further details reveal that it will also have a 2.4-inch color display, 512MB RAM, 4GB of internal storage, reaching up to 128GB microSD card support, dual SIM functionality (Nano SIM + Standard SIM), 2-megapixel rear camera, and VGA front camera. In addition, Reports state that users will get 2000mAh battery, FM radio, and Bluetooth 4.1 + LE with the handset. Jio plans, for Rs. 80-90, are also expected to be in the fore front for the new feature phone buyers.
Lastly, with this low-cost phone, Jio apparently aims at the million of customers, who are still apprehensive of using mobile networks because of the myth circulated that smartphones won’t come for a minuscule price.
