Aiming to extend the reach of its 4G network further, Reliance Jio will soon be launching 4G VoLTE-enabled feature phone. This is according to report by 91mobiles. and The Indian Express. With its LYF branded smartphones facing stiff competition from its Chinese competitors, Reliance retail is trying consolidate the relatively untapped market of 4g feature phones.
According to industry insiders the Jio feature phones will come in two models . Both with 512MB RAM, 4GB on-board storage and expandable memory option. The phone would be powered with U.S. manufactured Qualcomm or Chinese Spreadtrum processors, since Jio has partnered with both. It is to be noted that Qualcomm has already announced the 205 chipset targeting the 4G feature phone category. The phone might also sport a 2MP rear camera, a VGA front camera, WiFi connectivity, NFC and GPS tracking feature. The 4G handsets are also expected to come pre-loaded with the suite of Jio apps.
Domestic phone manufacturers Micromax and Lava have already rolled out their 4G feature phones, priced in the range of Rs. 2000 to Rs. 3600. The Jio 4G feature phone is rumoured to be priced around Rs. 1700 to Rs. 1800. A large section of the consumers are yet to experience the wonders of a smartphone. The reason being the disparity in price of the feature phones and the smart ones. Reports suggest Jio will be selling its 4G feature phones at subsidised prices to grasp this market opportunity.
If reports are to be believed, the Jio feature phones have been given to the company’s employees in Chennai for testing purpose. With LAVA and Micromax already in the 4G feature phone market, it is hoped that Jio won’t be delaying much to seize the market opportunity.
