Good news for all the Reliance Jio Phone users out there. This budget 4G VoLTE feature phone might soon get support for instant messaging app WhatsApp. Even if this news has not reached confirmation either from WhatsApp or Reliance Jio, the recent reports have revealed about this process being worked on.

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a native app for KaiOS. Now, the Jio Phone runs on KaiOS, i.e. a web-based operating system designed for the Jio Phone which has been forked from Firefox OS. Earlier, Mozilla had also tried to create a similar base for apps using HTML5 but has failed to do so.

Also, after the success and positive feedback of the Reliance Jio Phone, the company has in fact, also partnered with companies like HMD Global and Alcatel to power their feature devices such as the Nokia 8810 and Alcatel OneTouch Flip Go.

However, the Reliance Jio Phone was the best-selling feature phone, at least in the fourth quarter of 2017 and the company had also claimed of its sale in millions of units. Last month, WhatsApp’s parent company Facebook had also announced the Facebook app for the Jio Phone. To add more to it, Google had announced the launch of the Google Assistant for the Jio Phone, last year.

Last month at the MWC 2018, KaiOS revealed that it now supports apps from Google, Facebook, and Twitter. While WhatsApp was missing from this list, this messaging app is also expected to soon launch an app for the Linux-based light operating system.

According to a report published by WABetaInfo, “Important references about the development of a new native KaiOS app had been found in the latest WhatsApp beta for Windows Phone 2.18.38, indicating the presence of a new platform that can be connected to WhatsApp servers.”

However, this measure by Reliance Jio is definitely a bad news for the other telecom operators like Airtel and Vodafone. Unavailability of WhatsApp was the only hurdle which refrained the customers to go for Jio Phone. Now, with the messenger on board, there are chances that people would go for Jio Phones more as it offers more data at a lesser price and lists both WhatsApp and Facebook.
