Whatsapp is in the news again. The news of Whatsapp adding payments via UPI( Unified Payments Interface) has been going round for many days. Now, it seems that this is true. The WhatsApp UPI integration has been found in the beta version of the Android app. As per the blog published by WABtainfo, the UPI payment page is not disclosed in the Whatsapp for Android beta version 2.17.285. The opt-in feature will permit the instant payments as UPI will work on IMPS protocol.

The blog stated that the WhatsApp Payments reads like “The immediate bank to bank transfer with UPI”. Users would have to just tap on the agree and continue at the bottom of the page to accept the list of WhatsApp Payments Terms and Privacy Policy in addition to the Bank’s Terms and Privacy Policy. The report also states that the feature is “hidden and under development”. So even if the users have a beta version of WhatsApp, the feature might not be visible right now.

In comparison with the other popular messaging services like WeChat and Hike Messenger, WhatsApp have started a bit late in supporting the payment services. However, a push from WhatsApp, which has right now a customer base of over 200 million all over India, can easily reach the zenith of digital payments in India.

PTI repeated the words of National Payments Corporation of India(NPCI), which stated about WhatsApp having the possibility of UPI integration even before Facebook Messenger. Further, AP Hota, MD and CEO of NPCI, spoke to reporters about the companies working for assemblage with UPI. He added that “As far as Whatsapp is concerned, discussions have commenced…For Facebook, discussions are in preliminary stage”.

However, the procedure will be completed only after the final nod of approval from RBI. If things fall into place, Google will probably be the first one to add UPI payments in India.
