To all the WhatsApp users out there, be aware!! This Facebook owned messaging service would stop working on certain smartphones after December 31 and yes its true!! This also further refers to the fact that many of the smartphone users would not be able to run WhatsApp on their phones.
WhatsApp, as known is quite dynamic always with its updates and frequently adds new features to the platform. These features also require newer versions of OS to run. WhatsApp added that some of the phones won’t be able to support the new features that it plans to bring in future and thus is the reason why it is ending the support on them.
In addition, the chat company has also shared a list of devices that would see the end of the support. Many of the devices in the list have already stopped supporting the app while some are going to lose the support after December 31. It was only previous year that it had snapped the support for Windows Phone 8.0, BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 while this year Nokia S40 series phones would stop running WhatsApp after December 31. The company has also confirmed its plans to end drop support for Android Gingerbread and iPhones running iOS 7 or older in 2020.
Now, for better reference of the users, here is the list of all the OS that have been or might be affected by WhatsApp’s move. First comes the list of OS that have already stopped supporting WhatsApp:
- Android versions older than 2.3.3
- Windows Phone 8.0 and older
- iPhone 3GS/iOS 6
- Nokia Symbian S60
- BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10
Now, the list of operating systems that will loose support after 31st December, 2018:
- Nokia S40 until December 31, 2018
- Android versions 2.3.7 and older until February 1, 2020
- iOS 7 and older until February 1, 2020
Lastly, WhatsApp wants users to upgrade to a newer version or to one of the followings:
- Android running OS 4.0 and above
- iPhone running iOS 8 and above
- Windows Phone 8.1 and above
